Review: Midnight Cruisin' was Japanese city pop incumbent Kingo Hamada's fourth album, and a standout from his Alpha Moon years. Again reissued but this time on cobalt blue vinyl, we're once again reintroduced to a genius work in the soft-lit world of Japanese AOR, with rich session work from guitarist and longtime collaborator Makoto Matsushita helping see through and execute its nighttime streetlight-trailed vision in sound. The record distills Hamada's mid-career shift towards eventidal sounds with cleaner production and mellower tempi, a formula which occasionally otherwise collapses into lachrymosity on the string-slathered ballad 'A Faint Illusion'.
