Review: Since her debut EP and LP arrived in 2019, Arlo Parks has grown into one of the most vital voices in modern British soul. Review: After an explosive announcement trailer showing American MC legend Busta Rhymes on a four way call with some of the greatest hip-hop producers of all time it's hard not to be excited: Pharell Williams, Timbaland and Swizz Beats. His 11th studio album. Busta is indisputably one of the top 50 MCs of all time, a gracious and benevolent force in the industry that has played a hand in Miss Elliot's career, as well as a host of others on his self-founded label Conglomerate. Busta is no nice guy though, with a spine-chilling level of raw talent he's one of the smartest to hold the mic in our time. If 2020's 'Extinction Level Event 2: The Wrath of God' is anything to go off, expect a star-studded line-up, with that album having appearances from Eminem, Mary J Blige, Rapsody, Ol' Dirty Bastard, Q-Tip, Kendrick Lamar, Mariah Carey, Rick Ross and more. When Busta knocks, you answer. Even Timbaland bows to the king: "I'm so grateful that you chose for me to be a part of your legacy".

Review: Warner Records has put together this special reissue of The Rising Tied as a limited-edition apple-red double album which includes four bonus cuts that are making their vinyl debut. It first landed in 2005 from Linkin Park's Mike Shinoda and marked his first foray into solo hip-hop production. The album went platinum and is packed with big-name collaborations with plenty of the scene's biggest names sun as Como as well as pop heroes like John Legend. Those bonus tracks are 'Be Somebody,' 'There They Go,' and 'The Hard Way' which were on CD back in 2005 and 'Welcome' which was a standalone single in 2015.

Review: It's very much a case of expecting the unexpected when it comes to Omar S' FXHE label and this latest effort is no exception. In the US the gap between hip-hop and dance music culture is even wider than it is here in the UK, only not in Detroit and its unique export, namely ghetto tech. FULL BODY DU RAG whips up an idiosyncratic but thoroughly addictive combination of ghetto, house and garage, hip-hop and jazz across eight tracks here, the borders between the genres being fluid at all times. Omar himself makes an appearance on 'Juice', a speedy but classy dancefloor workout, half tech and half house, that along with the hilarious but irresistible 'Trillionaire' boasts a skippy garage swing to the beats to boot. At the other end of the BPM spectrum we get 'Pussy On The Map" (feat NLGHTND) with its r&b strains, only nicely warped and sonically corrupted. Probably best of all is 'FBD X CERT', almost a moody grime exercise until a four to the floor rides roughshod through such conventional plans. Raw, racy - and utterly essential.

Review: Jamaican-born, Maryland resident Hiero announces his talent with a debtor EP that offers a hazy and lo-fi trip into hip-hop beats and wavy grooves. It is seductive and sublime, stylish and effortless in its blurred lines and imperfect drums, with guest appearances from the always on form West London-based MC Lord Apex, plus XXL Freshmen and Interscope Records' artist Charles Hamilton. These are warm and organic sketches that suit backyard BBQs, lazy smoking sessions on the sofa and plenty of emotive situations in between. We already can't wait to hear more from this man.

'Horror Games' has a squelchy synth bass line that carries the loose drum work and bustling methane of background vocals and found sounds. A lead singer takes charge up top as various chatting crowds play out in the background. It's a busy tune that also comes as an instrumental for those who prefer the focus to be on the well crafted drums and bass.

Review: London might be seen as one of the hottest places for new, urban jazz sounds, but this album Second Light from Kepler Is Free shows that Greece also has its own vibrant scene. Their debut album was a quickly sold out success and now the jazz rock ensemble is back with more expansive work that traverses the 60s, 70s, soul jazz, hip hop and experimental in all new ways. The band was founded in 2018 and though all members are relatively young, they show their maturity here with more widescreen and entrancing sounds that come in collaboration with LEX, one of Greece's best-known rappers.

Review: Oakland's SNDTRAK dropped his long awaited debut album back in 2021. It was a big hit right off the bat and now it gets a welcome reissue. These are snappy beats with rolling drums, deep hip hop instrumentals that bring the best of the dusty school to fresh new school thinking. Delicate melodies are buried within, soulful vocal smears drift in and out of ear shot and well played bass slowly rotate sunder the tunes to bring languid funk. Sunny and heart aching, heat damaged and stoned, this is a warming soundtrack on many different levels.

Review: Floridian musician Tedi Robinson specialises in what he calls "mellowfunkism" - a smooth, colourful, Prince-influenced take on retro-futurist soul that various draws inspiration from jazz-funk, '80s groove, contemporary R&B and P-funk. It's this attractive, effortlessly soulful trademark sound that's showcased on Robinson's second Six Nine Music "45" as Son of Pearl. Robinson's dazzling bass and smooth vocals take pride of place on A-side 'Wonderful', alongside head-nodding, hip-hop style beats, glistening guitars and twinkling electric piano sounds. Over on the reverse, 'The Other Side of Nowhere' boasts all manner of kaleidoscopic, P-funk-influenced synth sounds, crunchy R&B drums and more elastic bass courtesy of Robinson, whose vocals are once again superb.

During the pandemic, he started dancing at home each day which in turn inspired him to record this percussive opus alongside some of the Motor City's most talented rappers and musicians. With plenty of improvised elements, it was all recorded in one take and is a fine exploration of rhythm and sound.
